Ouray, Colorado
Ouray is a small town located in southwestern Colorado. It is often referred to as the "Switzerland of America" due to its beautiful alpine scenery, including rugged peaks, cascading waterfalls, and hot springs.
Ouray is a popular destination for outdoor activities such as hiking, rock climbing, ice climbing, and snowshoeing. The town is also known for its historic mining district. One of the main winter attractions in Ouray is the Ouray Ice Park, which features over 200 man-made ice and mixed climbs in a natural gorge.
Other popular attractions include the Ouray Hot Springs Pool, Box Canyon Falls Park, and a variety of great breweries & restaurants with rooftop views.
With so much variety in the landscape, Ouray is an amazing spot for family or senior portraits.
Where should we take photos in Ouray?
There are lots of amazing locations in Ouray. Whether you want to park and be there or take a jeep tour, there is a spot for you! Once you book your session, I will send over an exclusive location guide with all of my favorite spots I have personally scouted for light and scenery. My favorite places are along the Million Dollar Highway or on Camp Bird Road towards Yankee Boy Basin.
What time of year is best?
You really can't go wrong in Ouray! There are pros and cons to each season though.
This is the most popular time of year in Ouray, so there can be a little more crowding but I know of several locations where we aren't likely to run into crowds. If you are planning to come in July, try to be flexible with a couple of dates you can have your photo session- it does rain often!
Fall is absolutely stunning in Ouray. The leaves are spectacular and the crowds have thinned out. Some areas may not be accessible though and you'll want to be prepared for temperature drops or snow!
Ouray is absolutely magical in the winter. There are several spots that will not be accessible, but it can also be fun to have a snowshoe adventure!
This is off season in Ouray, meaning many shops and restaurants will be closed. Expect some snow and mud, but absolutely no crowds!
