Looking for an epic selfie spot or maybe a place to take some family portraits in Montrose? I’ve got ya covered.

Montrose, Colorado is the gateway to the San Juans and many people travel here as a passthrough to Telluride, Ouray, and Crested Butte- but Montrose itself has a lot of natural beauty! Most notably, the Black Canyon, but there are lots of hidden gems around town!

Uncompahgre River

A tributary of the famous Gunnison River, this river starts at Lake Como and flows down through Montrose, eventually joining the Gunnison in Delta. There are lots of great spots along this river, and virtually anywhere along the path that inds behind the Colorado Outdoors Complex is a great spot.

Montrose Botanic Gardens

One of my absolute Spring and Summer locations in Montrose, the Botanic Gardens are filled with native plant & flower species. There are lots of beautiful spots for photos, and they even hold weddings & events at the pavilion. Don’t forget to become a member or donate in the drop box while you are there- this free community garden relies on donations to keep it accessible to the public. A portion of all of my sessions here are donated to the Montrose Botanical Society.

River Bottom Park

Home to the water sports park, skate park and a great trail system, Riverbottom is a Montrose icon! With big trees, a duck pond, a rushing river and acres of gorgeous landscape, this spot is a no-brainer for senior portraits, families and couples!

Black Canyon

Last but certainly not least, Montrose’s claim to fame- the Black Canyon doesn’t disappoint. With expansive views, incredible geologic features, and year-round accessibility; this is an amazing spot for portraits. Be sure to follow LNT (leave no trace) principles while you are here- and check with your local photographer for the best times of day to shoot here- the light can be tricky!
